CLARIFICATION SOUGHT BY CONCERNED PARISIONERS RE LEAKING ROOF IN ST MARY’S CHAPEL, SWANLINBAR

“St. Mary’s Church, Swanlinbar because of its distinctive architectural ambience, is a beautiful spot for the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy of the Church. Following on from the recent sanctuary enhancement under my direction, myself and Fr Benny believe St Mary’s is the one of the best examples of modern Church architecture in the Diocese of Kilmore. As Parish Priest it is my responsibility to maintain this ecclesiastical structure both materially and spiritually and it is my intention to do all I can to accomplish this for this generation, please god. We have a wee problem however in the roof department, that has been a thorn in everyone’s side for over 40 years now. €111,000 was spent on the Church building just before I arrived in the Parish in 2017, replacing the windows and flat roof repair. This work has been well executed and represents good value for money. The flat roof repair was carried out by Connacht Asphalt Roofing Limited, Co. Sligo. Some historic water leaks persist however (namely from the valley). Having studied the situation we believe the problem stems from the 2 foot parapet/barge wall, creating a valley over your head as you walk into the main body of the Chapel from the front entrance area. A few of us had another look at it about 2 weeks ago and we all agreed on a first step. Remove the parapet/barge wall, thus eliminating the valley and allowing the main pitched roof of Chapel area to extend across the existing valley and parapet wall section, thus allowing the roof water to proceed unhindered to the gutterings. I see this as priority work and because of your historic and ongoing generosity we have the funds to accomplish this much needed inexpensive first step. The tex screws securing the cladding to the main roof are perishing and corroding and will need attention later, but I think the first step is the valley. I hope you have found this description helpful and we intend to begin this course of action following consultation as a committee as soon as weather permits”. Fr Maurice
